Audience

With our piece being targeted at a radio 1 audience and presented in a similar manner to that of radio 1’s educational podcast that are spoken about here it makes sense to talk about their audience and its profiles.

Radio 1 is demographically based meaning that they target young people in the age range between 15-29-year-olds, however, what is key is that it should have a distinctive mix of music and speech-based content and be a place for new music (BBC,2016). This means that the treatment we utilise for the programme will be significantly different from that of a speech-based programme on radio 4 with us having to try and reflect and make the content relevant to young people. Ultimately the programme will have to snappy and to the point with use of music beds throughout the piece and not use flowery language to extend things beyond what they need to be.

Alongside this, it has been well documented that in the current media environment young peoples attention is more spread than ever with programmes now having to be supported through the likes of digital content such as Youtube or Facebook videos to attract listeners and be a more multiplatform brand compared to what radio was many years ago(Guardian,2016). This also means we need to consider how we utilise social media and do so in a way that is similar to radio 1 currently rather than say radio 2 with this being our target audience.  The way we have done this is by utilising short-form videos such as filming interviews and relevant clips that support interviews with subtitles underneath, alongside this some of those who listen to it will be most likely be deaf so its appropriate for subtitles.

Radio for young people has also morphed into an on-demand platform with users being able to listen to what they want when they want through the likes of the Iplayer and Spotifys podcasts, this again makes a relevant case for a podcast due to it being able to be downloaded at any time.  It is also different in the that it is focusing on something that is otherwise not talked about very often.

Learning Objectives

1. To improve my confidence in approaching contributors and in talking to people, even if they do say no to being involved.

2. Create strong multiplatform content. With radio turning ever more multiplatform and brand orientated this is crucial and I didn’t fully utilise this in my last project.

3. Create a strong piece that can stand in my portfolio. Despite being similar to one of mine from the last project, this was too experimental and risque for me to put the whole piece on a blog.

4.  Be able to tell a good story through the scripting of the pieces and in the tone of my voice/ delivery of the script. ]

5. Improve my interview skills in both writing questions and actually interviewing people.

First Research

The first element of research that we did was to scour the internet for relevant charities to what we are doing so that they could fulfil my need for the project to have a client and provide a sense of gravitas to the project.

To do this we simply made a google doc which allowed us to place links and information on relevant charities in Lincolnshire and the Uk in general. It also allowed us to store phone numbers and emails so that the process of contacting them was easier.  At the same time as this I also drafted an email to allow us to successfully ‘sell’ ourselves to the charities so that people would be willing to be involved.

About

Senses is a series of 3 podcasts/ radio programmes to air on Siren FM in late April, each episode will discuss different disabilities, with speech, hearing and sight.  To do this we have spoken to both those who have been affected and those who work in relevant areas.

I will be narrating each episode and will be the one who conducts the interviews. Working alongside me is Chloe Abraham and Molly Edwards.

First Meeting with Rose

In our first meeting with rose we discussed how we intended to go about producing our idea. This meant that we discussed all relevant options such as not just doing a documentary about speech therapy but doing a series of podcasts around different senses such as hearing and blindness etc, it was also agreed that this would be a lot easier to achieve as it would mean talking to less people about a specific problem. Furthermore we also discussed a client as I would need to do this, it was agreed that we would approach charities relevant to a young audience that have disabilities and see if they would be willing.  Finally we talked about how to incorporate a visual element with me suggesting short form video and Molly being keen to do this.

Things to do for the next meeting:

  • Clarify our idea further.
  • Come up with learning objectives.
  • Approach relevant charities.
